From the Supermarket Till to Manchester City: The Unhurried Journey of Tijjani Reijnders

#秘話

A Footballer Who Understands Both the Game and Life

“A footballer who worked the checkout at a local supermarket before turning professional now orchestrates the midfield for Manchester City.”

Does that simple, unadorned truth not send a warm shiver through the romantic heart?

Born in the Netherlands, Tijjani Reijnders is a rare creature in modern football.

Caught between tender family obligations and lofty athletic ambitions, he never allowed his feet to leave the solid earth.

Before arriving at European football’s most glittering summit, his calendar was filled with ordinary days: scanning groceries, stocking shelves, and battling through rugged amateur fixtures in the lower tiers.

Yet it was precisely those “ordinary” afternoons that sculpted him into an extraordinary, irreplaceable footballer.

Skinny Limbs in a Men’s League: The Teenage Crucible

Alongside his brother Eliano—who would go on to represent the Indonesian national team—
their father Martin made the unorthodox choice of withdrawing them from FC Twente’s academy to place them into local amateur club CSV ’28 in an adult league.

They were barely mid-teens. To share a pitch with seasoned grown men, their frames were absurdly fragile.

“Their kits were hanging off them. We actually had to order special extra-small jerseys,”

recalls CSV ’28 team manager Rijkens with an affectionate laugh.

Yet small stature proved anything but a handicap.

Instead, it honed their technical dexterity and raw acceleration to razor sharpness.

“Dangerous to dribble against giants? Not at all. They were so quick the defenders couldn't lay a finger on them.”

That baptism of fire became the foundation of his uncanny evasion skills throughout his senior career—an instinctive sixth sense for slipping out of crunching challenges unharmed.

The Weight of Honest Labour: Scanning Barcodes at the Supermarket

Advancing into the PEC Zwolle youth system, Tijjani began knocking on the door of the senior side.

Yet his family deliberately urged him to take a detour.

“Precisely because professional football is within reach, keep your feet firmly on the ground,” they advised.

Thus, while maintaining his status as an aspiring amateur footballer, he clocked in for regular shifts at the local Aldi supermarket.

“I punched the till and earned a few hundred euros a month. That experience remains anchored deep inside me,” Reijnders would reflect years later.

Just like passing goods across a laser scanner item by item, he learned to register the real weight and dignity of human life with his own two hands.

Signing a professional contract was no guarantee of smooth sailing.

A transfer to AZ Alkmaar demanded intense physical reconditioning and relentless tactical drills.

Securing a regular starting berth required years of patient grit.

There was even an unglamorous loan spell at RKC Waalwijk.

Yet Reijnders never grew bitter or disillusioned.

“I was always a late developer. But because my family stood behind me, I never stopped believing,” he noted.

Eventually, his complete midfield repertoire exploded at AZ, followed by a majestic ascension at AC Milan.

By the 2024–25 campaign, he had notched 15 goals from midfield, banging down the gates of the Premier League with irresistible authority.

And Now, the Grandest Stage: Manchester City

Under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, what new heights will Reijnders scale?

At San Siro, he mastered the delicate alchemy of balancing defensive diligence with decisive, line-breaking incursions. That multifaceted dynamism makes him a dream weapon for City’s complex positional machinery.

Moreover, he possesses something beyond pure technical data: an inner depth forged by honest work, the sanctity of hard graft, and the grounding love of his family.

Running with the Heart, Passing with the Soul

Reijnders is far more than a refined technician.

On the pitch and in life, he is a man who knows the sacred value of balance.

The sweat of an honest wage, the enduring embrace of his household, the long and winding road from dreaming from afar to standing in the spotlight.

Every single one of those memories infuses his distribution with foresight, patience, and warmth.

Now, clad in sky blue, he prepares to command the most demanding theater in world football.

The eternal aesthetic idealism of Dutch football wedded to the rooted realism of a working-class boy.

That sublime harmony is destined to paint Manchester City with unforgettable new colours.
